Ntseki rates Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup

Bafana Bafana have not participated in the World Cup since hosting the competition a decade ago, but coach Molefi Ntseki believes they are in good standing to make the cut in Qatar in two years time.

The last time South Africa qualified for the global showpiece event was when Portuguese mentor Carlos Queiroz guided his charges to an unbeaten run in the 2002 qualifiers.

Bafana in good stead

The man currently at the helm is quoted by IOL saying the recent influx of South African players into Europe puts Bafana in good stead in their ambitions to make a third appearance at the World Cup.

“In recent years, we’ve seen a decline in the numbers of players we are exporting,” Ntseki says.

“When you look back since 2014 we are seeing an increase of players that we are exporting again. We are profiling them and we will bring them into the set-up.

“It is important to have a top league because we can export players. When that happens we will have a strong team.

“A strong national team will compete in the Cosafa Cup and dominate the region. A strong national team will compete in the Afcon and do well.”

Showcasing South African talent

South Africa had a decent outing in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, making it past the group stage and eliminating hosts, Egypt in the Round of 16 before exiting in the quarterfinals.

They began the 2021 qualifiers on a losing note away to Ghana, but bounced back against Sudan in their second fixture.

Ntseki believes Africa’s premier soccer competition will be a good platform to showcase South African talent.

“Doing well in the Afcon will also produce good quality players and they will be scouted by European teams.

“When that happens, we will have players who will qualify for the World Cup. Not just qualifying but doing well in the competition itself.”

Bafana will compete against Ghana, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia in the World Cup qualifiers, with the first batch of fixtures scheduled to take place in October.
